Kaua'i Group Outings Calendar

SIERRA CLUB KAUA`I GROUP OUTINGS

 October -December 2008

Join us on one of these outings to explore and care for our island. Please note the level of hiking proficiency and round-trip mileage for each hike. Participants must sign a liability waiver. Requested hike donation for Sierra Club members and participants under 18: $1 For others: $5. You can sign up to become a member on the outing. Women are advised not to camp or hike in remote areas alone on Kaua'i for safety reasons.


 Sun. Oct. 5 Nonou (Sleeping Giant)/East Side/6 miles/moderately strenuous. Hiking up one trail and down another let's you see it all. Incredible, sweeping views, and magnificent vegetation. Allan Rachap 742-1001

Sun. Oct 12 Maha'ulepu sunset to full moon walk. South Shore/Moderate/ 4 miles. Coastal hike starts at Shipwreck Beach late afternoon & ends with a full moon glistening on the ocean. We'll shuttle cars for a one-way hike. Incredible views every step of the way! Wendy McIlroy 634-0438

Mon. Oct 13 National Tropical Botanical Gardens. South Side/moderate/2 miles. Enjoy gardens in afternoon and watch an almost full moon rise over Lawai Bay. Opportunity to see beautiful gardens & learn about native plant propagation. Sierra Club members only. Bob Nishek 346-0476

Sat. Oct. 18- Canyon trail/ Kokee/ moderately strenuous/ 4 miles. Descending part-way into the Waimea canyon for spectacular views along one rim, we meet up with the Ditch trail & then return. Jane Schmitt 826-6105

Sun. Oct 19 Awa'awapuhi Trail. Koke'e/Strenuous/ 6.5 miles/ Descend over 1200' through native forest to a stunning view of Awa'awapuhi and Nu'alolo Valleys. Return is a steady, steep climb. Kathy Valier 826-7302

Sat. Oct 25 Makaleha Springs/Eastside/Strenuous /2.5 miles. Walk through bamboo forests and along Makaleha stream up to springs with a few stream crossings on a rugged stream bed. Lush, tropical vegetation and waterfalls. Boreas 639-3009

 Sun. Oct 26. Surfrider, Sierra Club, Save Our Seas, and Friends of Kamalani/Lydgate Beach Park team up for a Beach Clean-up at Nukoli'i Beach. Please help clean this beautiful stretch of undeveloped coastline that seems to be a magnet for marine debris. Gloves and trash bags will be provided. Please bring water, hat and sunscreen. Start at 9:00 AM. Directions: From Kapa'a turn makai just past the golf course. From Lihue, turn makai just after the Hilton and before Wailua Golf Course. Follow the dirt road past the motocross track area to an area known as Marine Camp at Nukoli'i Beach. Look for the Surfrider and Sierra Club banners. Sat. Nov 1 - Kuilau Trail/ East side/easy/3.5 miles. This trail offers great rewards without a lot of effort. Glorious views & ever-present bird-songs reward you along this trail. Neil Brosnahan 346-8460 and Judy Dalton

Sat. Nov. 8. Kapaa Rocky Shoreline Clean Up at 9am. East side/easy/1 mile. Meet at Mahelona Overlook. Closed shoes/tabis.(No flip-flops.) Bags & gloves provided. Bring serrated knife if possible. Karen Tilley 821-8008

Sun. Nov 9 Mahaulepu/South Shore/ Moderate/3 Miles. Spectacular coastal walk with stunning views each step of the way! Magnificent coastline with unique, fascinating craggy rock formations. Not to be missed. Car shuttle makes this a leisurely one way hike. Allan Rachap 742-1001

Tues. Nov. 11 Haena to Ke'e BeachWalk/Northshore/ Easy/ 2 miles. Enjoy the sunset views of Na Pali and return by moonlight. Kathy Valier 826-7302

Sun. Nov 16- Powerline Trail/ East side to North shore/ Strenuous/ 9 miles. Shuttle from North shore to Wailua for a one way trip along a ridge offering Kauai's best views of the northeast quadrant of the island. Jane Schmitt 826-6105

Sat. Nov 22 Okolehao Trail North side/ Strenuous/5 miles. Hike up a ridge crest to take in stunning views of Hanalei Valley and Bay and Waioli Valley. Boreas 639-3009

Tues. Nov. 25 Waimea Canyon Road Cleanup/West Side/Easy/ 2 miles. Afternoon clean up of Sierra Club's adopted highway usually requires about 1.5 hours. Please help keep the gateway to Waimea Canyon clean. Bob Nishek 346-0476

Sun. Nov 30 - Canyon to Black Pipe Loop Hike/Kokee State Park /Strenuous/6-mile loop. A wonder-filled forest and ridge view hike crossing Kokee Stream to spectacular views of Waimea Canyon and Waipoo Falls. Lunch at Kumuwela Lookout. Neil Brosnahan 346-8460 and Judy Dalton.

Sun. Dec 7. Donkey Beach to Anahola Beach trek. East side/3.5 miles Moderate. Experience presently remote, beautiful beaches and stunning coastline. One way with car shuttle. Judy Dalton 246-9067 and Karen Tilley

Fri. Dec. 12 Hanalei Bay Full Moon walk/ North shore/ Easy/ 2 miles. Meet just after sunset at Hanalei Pier and stroll the hard packed sands of Hanalei Bay with North shore mountains highlighted by the full moon. Jane Schmitt 826-6105

Sun. Dec. 14 Waipoo Falls/Koke`e/ Moderately strenuous/ 2.5 miles. Views, and more views along this spectacular hike. Picnic by a pool below a waterfall. Allan Rachap 742-1001

Sat. Dec 20. Polihale to Queens Pond Beach Walk and Swim. West Side/ Easy/ 2.5 miles. Walk along this magnificent beach and enjoy a dip in warm ocean water of Queens Pond. Car shuttle for an easy one way walk. Judy Dalton 246-9067

Friday Dec. 26 Anahola Shoreline Clean Up. East side/easy/.5 mile. Meet at Anahola Beach Park at 10 am. After, brown bag lunch and swim. Bags and gloves provided. Bring serrated knife if able. Karen Tilley 821-8008

Sat. Dec 27 Alakai Swamp Trail/ Koke'e/ West side/ Strenuous/ 7 miles. Hike through mountain rain forest via boardwalks to lookout at Kilo Ana for a spectacular vista of the North shore. Spot rare endemic plants & birds. Need 4-wheel vehicles for shuttle to trail head. Neil Brosnahan 346-8460.
