Kaua'i Group Outings

Join us on one of these outings to explore and care for our island. Please note the level of hiking proficiency and round-trip mileage for each hike. Pack rain gear, sufficient water for duration of hike, lunch, hat, shoes with a good grip. No sandals or flip-flops. Participants must sign a liability waiver. Requested donation for hikes: $1 from Sierra Club members and participants under 18.  $5 for non-members. You can sign up to become a member on the outing.  

Outings Classifications: (C) Conservation/Interpretive (E)Educational (F) Family/Fun (S) Service.

We welcome children on hikes depending on age of child and difficulty of outing at the discretion of hike leader. Under age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. 

 Note to visitors to Kaua'i: If leaving messages for outings leaders to call you back, please provide a local Hawaii number to avoid long distance charges to our volunteer leaders. Mahalo for your consideration.

Women are advised not to camp or hike in remote areas alone on Kaua'i for safety reasons.

Sat Mar 3 Jewel of Koke'e, Strenuous/7 miles. (C/E) Spectacular hike through forest of Koke'e, Black Pipe Trail, Canyon Trail, Po'omau Canyon Lookout. Cross over Waipo'o Falls for view of Waimea Canyon to the ocean. Bob Greene 245-9280

Sun Mar 4  Anini Beach Walk and Clean Up/ Easy/North Shore/1 mile (S/C/F)  Walk along the beautiful, tranquil shores of Anini Beach and clean up on the way back. Possible swim at end. Karen Tilley 821-8008 
  
Mon Mar 5 Nonou (Sleeping Giant) Conservation Service Project. East Side/strenuous/4 miles. (S/C) Tend to endangered native plants in their habitat and enjoy an almost full moon walk. Sierra Club members only.

Sat Mar10 Moalepe-Kuilau-Moalepe Trails/East side/Moderate/ 4.25 miles. (E/F) An opportunity to walk both trails with pleasant mountain views. Kathy Valier 826-7302

Sat Mar 17 Sierra Club and Surfrider team up for a Beach Clean Up. Do something green for St. Patrick's Day.(S/C) South Nukoli`i Beach/Easy 1/4 mile. Drive into Kaua`i Beach Resort on makai side of highway north of Hana'maulu. Go through their tree tunnel and at end turn right onto a road leading to the beach. Look for Sierra Club and Surfrider signs. Gloves, bags, snacks and cold water will be provided. Starts at 9 AM. Jeff Vesci 755-5587

Wed Mar 21 Donkey Beach (Kuna Bay) to Anahola Beach Coastal Walk. East Shore/moderately strenuous/5 miles.  (E/F) Walk along a wild coastline, yet untouched by any development. Bob Greene 245-9280

Sat Mar 24  Berry Flat Trail, Koke'e/easy-moderate 3.5 miles, (C/F). Lush forested hike through sugi pine and redwood groves. Denny Jackson and Erica Watson  647-0727

 

 

Monday, April2 Waimea Canyon Road Clean Up/Easy/ 2 miles.(S) Afternoon clean up of Sierra Club's adopted highway requires a little over an hour. Please help keep the gateway to Waimea Canyon litter-free. Bob Nishek at 346-0476.

Friday, April 6 Maha'ulepu Sunset to Full Moon Walk/South Shore/ Moderate/3 Miles. (C/E/F)  Start out in the afternoon from Shipwreck Beach for a spectacular coastal walk to Maha'ulepu. Enjoy the sunset and a full moon over the glistening ocean. We'll shuttle cars to make this a leisurely one way hike. Bill Snyder 652-1718

Saturday, April 14 Alakai Swamp/Koke'e/West side/Very strenuous/7 miles. (C/E/F)Mountain rain forest (not a swamp) rising 4,500 feet above the ocean. See primeval habitat for a variety of native plants and birds made accessible with the construction of boardwalks Sierra Club helped create. 4 wheel drives needed to carpool to trail head. Saturday, April 21 EARTH WEEKEND HIKE: Honopu Trail/Koke'e/Strenuous/5 miles. (E/F) Hike through native forest onto a ridge with spectacular views of Honopu Beach and Valley and along Na Pali. Kathy Valier 826-7302

Sunday, April 22  EARTH DAY BEACH CLEAN UP at Kealia Beach. (C/S) Freeing beaches of litter is about more than just making a beach attractive. It also protects the marine and other wildlife, the reef, and ocean. Will you please  help? Meet at Kealia Beach at 10:30AM by lifeguard station. Monday, April 30 National Tropical Botanical Gardens Moonlight Walk & Service Project. South Side/Moderate/2 miles. (C/E/S) Hike and learn about propagation of native plants in lovely gardens. Sierra Club members only. We'll offer 2 hours of volunteer help in the Gardens. Bob Nishek 346-0476

Maha'ulepu Beach Clean Up South Shore (C/E/S/F) Sierra Club, Malama Maha'ulepu & Surfrider team up to keep this majestic beach looking pristine and beautiful. Follow Poipu Road past the Grand Hyatt where it becomes a dirt road. Drive to T-intersection and turn right. Continue to parking area and look for banners. Beach clean up starts at 9AM and takes 2 - 3 hours depending on the number of participants. Afterward, relax and enjoy the newly-cleaned beach. Bring hat and water. Saturday, May 26 Kohua Ridge Trail/  Koke'e/Strenuous5 miles.  (E/F) Dazzling views of Waimea Canyon from the other side that few people ever see; plus stunning views of Koaie and Po'omau Canyons. Bob Greene 245-9280

Saturday, June 2  Kalepa Ridge/Strenuous /East side/8 miles (F) Enjoy sweeping coastal and valley views along the ridge which continues the Sleeping Giant range from Wailua River to Hanama`ulu. Bob Greene 245-9280

Saturday, June 30  Beach Clean Up and Walk. We'll clean up the beach on the walk out and stroll back enjoying its beauty. Meet by pier at Black Pot Beach at 10:30AM. We'll supply bags, gloves and refreshments. Vivian Hager 652-3234
