SKYLINE TRAIL VULCANISM HIKE

3-4 miles / moderate-strenuous / high elevation / Haleakala

Descend from summit of Haleakala 1,500' down the south rift zone and back. Explore the geological formations and learn about the forces that created the volcano. Great photographic opportunities. Bring all the usual items appropriate for a day hike at this elevation (8,000-10,000'). Meet at 8 AM in Pukalani Terrace Center parking lot (by Bank of Hawaii), or 9 AM at the Sliding Sands trail head parking lot, Haleakala National Park. Limit: 20. A special donation of $5 for members and $10 for non-members is requested for this educational event, a fundraiser for the S.C. Hawai`i Chapter. Leaders: Lucienne de Naie & Annie Lang. PU`UOLA`I BEACH HIKE

1.5 mile / moderate (part uphill) / Big Beach, Makena

Begin at Oneuli Beach (Kihei side of Makena), climb Pu`uola`i (Red Hill) to Oneloa Beach (Big Beach) with a swim and picnic along the way. Guide Mary Evanson [who helped lead Sierra Club efforts to create State Park at Makena (SPAM)] will discuss the Park's original plan and what needs to be done to make it a reality. Meet at 8 AM sharp @ Wailea Shopping Center front parking lot. Bring sturdy shoes, sunscreen, lunch, water, bathing suit. Leader: Annie Lang 573-4147.

HANA`ULA / KEALALOA RIDGE

all day / strenuous / uphill / fragile conditions / West Maui

Meet at 8 AM at Ma`alaea Harbor (Buzz's Wharf). Volunteers needed w/ high clearance four-wheel drive vehicles. After 4 miles of four-wheeling we'll hike the Ukumehame/Waikapu ridge lines through native `ohi`a and fern forest at 3,500 feet. Bring rain gear and lunch. Limit: 18. Leader: Scott Jensen. KAHIKINUI COASTLINE HISTORICAL TOUR

easy / car caravan with short walks / Ulupalakua-Kaupo

On the "back road" to Hana visit historical sites in dryland forest areas of Ulupalakua and Kahikinui. Included will be an explanation of historical locales and bird life at nearby Nu`u pond, a short hike along the coastline, and a picnic lunch at Hui Aloha Church. Guided by expert naturalist Renata Gassmann-Duvall. Meet at Rice Park (on Lower Kula Highway) at 8:30 AM. Limit: 20. Leader: Lucienne de Naie. Register via 573-4147.

Astronomer Harriet Witt-Miller will guide this evening walk and share her knowledge of ancient Hawaiian star lore on this first night of Makahiki (traditional Hawaiian New Year's celebration). Meet at 5:30 PM at Lahaina end of trail just beyond the tunnel (Lahaina direction). Bring picnic dinner. Leaders: Doug Joy and Annie Lang. Register via 573-4147.
