To say we are lucky to live in Hawai`i is an understatement. These islands are our most precious gift. As members of the Hawai`i Chapter, we share a common purpose in protecting and enjoying this land we call home.
In considering the tremendous work to be done in preserving and protecting our resources, the Executive Committee has made a renewed commitment to focus on shaping an environmental agenda for the state. As part of this effort, the Chapter will be hiring a Director to increase legislative action, generate publicity on environmental issues and coordinate a conservation strategy. In doing so, we hope to more effectively respond to issues and increase public awareness of how these issues affect our communities.
In this current economic climate, we too are faced with financial constraints and have had to make difficult decisions regarding our budget priorities. Out of necessity, we have had to lower production costs for the Malama which you can see has a new format. We welcome input, advertising revenue and volunteers willing to help continue the legacy of the Malama as a valuable chapter resource.
As always, a contribution to the Hawai`i Chapter means more support for conservation. If you haven't already responded to the March fund appeal letter, I ask you to consider a contribution of any amount. If every member gave $1, that would be worth $7,000--almost one-sixth of our total budget. If each of us gave $10, we could have a real impact on how our state is run. Think of the difference we would make.
We begin this new year with a sense of hope and commitment to our future generations. Please join us in this vision. Ua mau ke ea o ka `aina i ka pono.
Aloha,Katherine Walker
