O`AHU OUTINGS CORNER

by Reese Liggett, O`ahu Outings Chair

Last issue I reported that the Board of Land and Natural Resources (BLNR) had promulgated rules for public access at Wiliwilinui Trail (top of Waialae Iki). Although the rules don't give the public everything we believe warranted, they are rules we can live with. Now there are several actions ongoing that nevertheless could make the rules more restrictive: The Waialae Iki V Association (WIVA) has filed in Circuit Court to overturn BLNR's rules. But this has been placed on hold until June pending WIVA's effort through legislation to gain land owners more liability protection when they are making access available to outdoor recreation (this is legislation we support). Also WIVA is endeavoring to place more restrictions on public access via the easement document which City Council must pass. O`ahu Group on March 5, 1996 asked the Mayor to allow us to review said easement in its developmental stage, and we requested a public hearing if the easement is at variance with BLNR's rules.

This quarter's Outing schedule is chock full of Earth and National Trails Day events, a new trail building project that will raise badly needed money for the Group, and our usual mix of Outings and service projects. Members and the public have shown their appreciation for our activities with their huge participation--don't miss an event.

Also, everyone interested in Outings should get behind the Governor's call for a State Park--Ka Iwi Park--that would stretch from Koko Head to Makapu`u Beach. (Imagine if this magnificent wild vista were packed with resorts, golf courses and over built housing.) The Ka Iwi Park Action Council (KIAC) sponsored a walk March 9 at Makapu`u Lighthouse road. Many Outings Leaders and Club Members participated. This a call for action....

HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED:

Write and call City Council members and legislators NOW to make our viewpoint known--or the consequence will be NO beautiful view at all as you round the turn from Hanauma Bay and look out over Sandy Beach toward Makapu`u.
