O'ahu Group Outings Information


Unless otherwise stated in the outings description, participants meet at 8:00 am at the back porch of the Church of the Crossroads, 2510 Bingham Street. Do not leave your car in the church parking lot.

Participants in Windward outings which are designated with an asterisk (*) may also meet at 8:15 am at the First Hawaiian bank parking are in the Windward City shopping Center (intersection of Likelike and Kamehameha Highways in Kane'ohe).

Participants age 14 and under and Sierra Club members with a Sierra Club membership card - $1; all others - $3. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Calling all trailbuilders! Help us construct the Maunawili Falls access trail. Alternate meeting place/time is at the bus stop at the intersection of Kalanianaole Hwy and Auloa Rd at 8:30 a.m. Everyone can contribute -- we have tools for all strengths and all age levels from 14 to.... This is an interpretive hike -- families welcome, but children should be 9 or older. The path is steep, rough in places, and muddy. Meet at 1pm at the First Hawaiian Bank parking area in the Windward City Shopping Center. Leaders: Lorna Lee 545-7441; Doreen Line 395-3196

KA`ALA NATURAL AREA RESERVE SERVICE PROJECT
Ride a state truck up to the bog on Mt. Ka`ala, to help protect its native plant integrity through supervised labor. Send your name, phone number and address to Kokua Ka`ala, c/o Sierra Club, Hawai`i Chapter, P.O. Box 2577, Honolulu, HI 96803. You'll be notified by mail when it is your turn to participate. First Sunday and third Saturday of each month.

Miconia is the most terrible cousin of the clidemia we all hate, and it's a very serious threat in our islands. Bring insect repellant, rain gear. Work area is off the trail and surrounded by thick brush -- recommend long pants/shirt and clear lens eye protection recommended. 1996 trail builder bandana credit.

These hikes are for everyone...kids 5 and over accompanied by an adult, as well as adults without kids! They last about 2-2´ hours. Bring water, snacks, and raingear. 1996 O`ahu Group Service Project Schedule


These three-day service trips offer two days of work and a day of outings. Often, they allow entree where the general public is not permitted. To hold a space on the trip you need to send a deposit of $25.00 per person to the leader listed first. Make your check payable to the leader. The trips fill quickly, so send in your deposit now. Trips cost from $120-$150 per person, which includes airfare, ground transportation, meals, lodging, and a portion of the leaders' trip fees. This is a great opportunity to spend some quality time on the Kalaupapa peninsula doing much-needed preparation for restoration.

Really, it is not too soon to start planning for the MLK weekend in January. Na Kokua has scheduled service trips to Kilauea Point and Hakalau for that weekend. During the hectic holiday season, everyone is much too busy to think about a January trip, particularly the leaders. Send your $25.00 deposit now, make a note on your calendar to put this on your 1997 calendar, and just wait until the letter comes requesting the final trip fee balance. This will be prime time for cool weather and birds.
