O`ahu Outings Corner

Trail building is underway in Maunawili. Wally Hiraoka is the coordinator of the effort to build a little less than a mile of public access trail. The trail we build will join up with the trail on State land that leads to Maunawili Falls. Ten to twenty volunteers have been working with hoes and shovels on each Sunday and about every Sunday since May 11 -- and the product is the beginning of a splendid trail. See the schedule at the centerfold to get involved. If you have never built a trail before you are in for a treat. And don't miss this opportunity -- the chance to put trail where none previously existed doesn't present itself every year. You'll never forget seeing June, Marsha, Dick Davis, Dick Schmidt, Vince, Reuben, and Gayla shaping trail with pulaskis, hazel, hoes, crossbows, machetes and chainsaws.

The potluck party at Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club clubhouse has been a steady September event for Sierra Club and HTMC members for years. This year HTMC has set luau that both clubs are invited to for Saturday, September 28. The luau commemorates the 70th birthday of the clubhouse which is located in Waimanalo at 41-023 Pu`uone St. The cost is $12, or $10 for those under 12 years. Sierra Club members should reserve a place by mailing checks to Joyce Tomlinson, 91-1058 Kekuilani Loop # L1104, Kapolei 96707 by September 9. Offers of assistance are welcome. Arrive early for beach or volleyball. Luau gets underway at 2:00 pm.

You will notice the Outings schedule is a bit light in August -- we could use more Outing Leaders. If you enjoy our outings and would like to contribute to the Sierra Club by your volunteer leadership, come to the Outing Leader Seminar September 23. See the centerfold for details.

Our national trails day weekend was a great success. Over 220 people joined in our events this past June 1 and 2. The highlight was a full moon hike at Makapu`u led by Mike Gawley and Bob Moore on Saturday evening when 146 people participated in a most pleasant commemoration of National Trails Day 1996.

National Outing recruitment by Mel Yoshioka and Pat Onogi continues for limited time. On specially identified outings you can join or renew/extend your membership for only $25 and receive a free t-shirt or fanny pack.
