Assessing the Environmental Impacts of Tourism
The Sierra Club's lawsuit against the Hawai`i Tourism Authority

The Sierra Club filed a lawsuit against the Hawai`i Tourism Authority in January of 2000, asking
the state agency to perform an environmental assessment of spending state funds on their
massive marketing contract. This environmental review is required by Hawai`i state law. The
Tourism Authority is spending $114 million over the next 3 years on marketing campaigns and
they have set a goal of adding nearly 30,000 visitors per day to the islands in the year 2005.
