- 86% of the project site
is on agricultural lands of special importance to the state of Hawai’i
- Of these ag lands of special
importance, 76% of the land is classified as prime agricultural lands
and 20% is unique agricultural land
- The US Dept. of Agriculture
states: “This project would consume a significant acreage of prime farmlands”
Considering the number of land reclassifications they receive, they continue:
“Collectively, the impact is significant.”
- Koa Ridge ag lands are valuable
because of their proximity to markets, the harbor and airport.
- Further destruction of healthy
farmland jeopardizes opportunity for diversified agriculture, economic
expansion in ag, and self-sufficiency (O`ahu currently imports over 95%
of food consumed)
- Developing on agricultural lands
increases the speculative value of other ag lands around the state, making
farming less economically feasible
