March 25-27, 2011 -- Kahaualea Natural Area Reserve, Big Island -- Prince Kuhio Day Weekend **This trip requires a Thursday Night Departure **
Leader: Deborah Blair Email: deborahblair1@mac.com Phone: 955-4168
We will be working with NARS (Natural Area Reserve System) clearing a new 5 acre fenced enclosure. We will park by Thurston Lava Tube in Volcanoes National Park and then it's an easy 1/2 mile hike to our worksite.
The work for the weekend will be eradicating Kahili Ginger and Faya Tree. This is a new and exciting enclosure that we are working on and eventually when it's cleared we will be able to fill it with native plants.
Our accommodation will be at a well equipped house in Hilo at the NARS base yard.
April 22-24, 2011 -- Haleakala National Park, Maui -- Easter Weekend
Leader: Clyde Kobashigawa Email: clydekobashigawa@clearwire.net Phone: 262-6092
Our accommodation for the weekend is Kapalaoa Cabin situated in the center of Haleakala Crater. The work will be eradicating California Telegraph Plant and Plantago.
This trip is for hikers in good physical condition and for those who don't mind "Roughing It". We have a 7 mile hike in via the Sliding Sands Trail and we will exit via the Halemau'u trail. Participants will also have to deal with the elevation. The cabin was build in the 1930's by CCC workers and is very rustic. There is no washroom or shower facilities. There is an outhouse and people will have to live with "Horse Baths". We do have a 2 burner gas stove top and a wood burning stove to keep warm.
The reward for this service projects, if your up to the challenge, is spending the weekend in a very beautiful and fascinating National Park.
