Threats to Kealakekua Bay
Inappropriate development is the biggest threat to this wild coastline.
The picture above shows construction activities at the Hokulia development project site. On two occasions, runoff from this development polluted nearshore waters and deposited silt over fragile live corals. The picture below shows the sediment runoff polluting pristine, Class AA coastal waters adjacent to Kealakekua Bay.
These events resulted in a lawsuit and temporary restraining order against the developer. The same development project is also the subject of another lawsuit concerning the desecration of native Hawaiian burials and historical trails. Another immediate threat to Kealakekua Bay is the proposed Keopuka development project. This proposed project is a gated community with 125 luxury houses and golf course. Local citizens are rightfully concerned about the potentially disastrous effects of this project. The Keep Kealakekua Wild website also has the details and current status of this project.
