Efforts to Preserve Maha'ulepu
Local residents of Kaua'i have fought to preserve Maha'ulpeu for over 30 years. A local grass roots coalition, Malama Maha'ulepu , is currently organizing the effort to preserve this area. With some recent events, there is reason for cautious optimism.
Some of these events include:
a concurrent resolution passed by the 2001 State Legislature supporting preservation of Maha'ulepu (HCR 95 HD1)- a resolution passed by the Kaua'i County Council supporting preservation of Maha'ulepu (Resolution 2001-25)
- interest from Governor Cayetano in acquiring Maha'ulepu as a state park (see 6/8/01 Honolulu Advertiser article)
These events are encouraging. Yet, Grove Farm's current land manager has repeatedly stated his vision of a luxury hotel resort and golf course at Maha'ulepu. The concerted effort to preserve Maha'ulepu must continue until the land is protected.
